Instead of exhausting myself trying to run down every job lead I encountered from the myriad sources I was regularly checking, I needed to mentally divest myself from the task and place it in the hands of an expert. I needed to find somebody—one person—who was willing to sit and listen to my story and get to know me, my abilities, and my ambitions. I needed someone to see me as a person with differentiable qualities to market…and not simply as a resume in standard Arial 10-point font.

In November of last year, a former boss of mine put me in contact with Royce at Engineering Journeys. He’s a different kind of recruiter. Dear Royce,

This is a long overdue thank you note for moving me to “__” Engineering last September. Now that I’ve been at “__” Engineering for eight months, I have a list of reasons to be thankful!

Work has been going very well. I am working on the type of projects that I wanted including hydrologic and hydraulic modeling using the Rational Method, HEC-1, HEC-2 and various other programs. We recently were short-listed for a project … we get to do “the fun part,” engineering design of drop structures and other improvements.

As promised I received a six-month review, and a salary increase at that time. I received a second salary increase when there was a salary review for the whole company. The 9/80 work schedule is excellent, and I enjoy the people that I work with.

So, thank you again, Royce. This has been a terrific improvement for me and I will definitely recommend you when anyone else asks how I found the motivation to move.
